Robert Flitney - career history

1969 to 2004 worked for BHR Group Ltd, Cranfield, Bedford, UK, (formerly BHRA) providing 35 years experience of sealing technology research and development.

This included a period from 1995 – 2004 as Manager of the Sealing Technology activities and responsibility for all the company projects concerned with sealing technology and associated projects on pressure equipment reliability. Technical, budgetary and project management responsibilities for both short term consultancy and test projects, plus long term multi-client work.

Sealing projects ranged from short problem solving consultancies to collaborative industrial projects extending over several years. Extensive collaborative projects included; the reliability and testing of process plant mechanical seals, seal emissions, fundamental and application oriented projects on reciprocating seals, elastomer life prediction, rapid gas depressurisation of elastomers and high temperature operation of sub-sea hydraulic systems.

Other major projects undertaken have included both static and dynamic seals for applications ranging from high volume domestic and automotive components to marine and aerospace, defence, process and power, oil and gas to mining and minerals.

Prior to joining BHR Group 18 months were spent as an engineer in the frozen food industry responsible for detail design and implementation of plant modifications and supervision of sub-contractors. This followed engineering training in the marine industry which culminated as a senior watch keeper responsible for the operation and maintenance of steam plant on steam turbine powered tankers.
